Quick answer

For most people starting in cloud, the AWS Certified Solutions Architect Associate is the best value: a $150 exam with a 50% renewal discount (as of 2026-10-02). Google's Associate Cloud Engineer is cheaper at $125 and fits Google Cloud roles. CISSP is the senior security credential, with a five-year experience bar, a $749 exam and a $135 annual fee. CompTIA Security+ ($439) suits people moving into security, especially US government roles, but a new version launches in November 2026. Firsthand does not survey certificate holders; these ratings use the certifying bodies' published documentation.

A certification is only worth its fee if employers recognise it and you can keep it current without surprise costs. This guide compares four widely recognised IT certifications: AWS Certified Solutions Architect Associate, Google Cloud Associate Cloud Engineer, ISC2 CISSP and CompTIA Security+. Exam fees, formats and renewal rules come from each certifying body's own exam and renewal pages, in US dollars as of 2026-10-02 unless stated. None of these bodies publishes placement or salary outcomes for its credential, so Outcomes reflects the role the credential is built for, its entry bar and the formal recognition each body documents. We left out PMI's PMP because the exam fee did not display on PMI's site when we checked. We score each one on five weighted criteria: Outcomes (30%), Cost and Value (25%), Academics (20%), Support Services (15%) and Flexibility (10%). Firsthand does not audit programs or survey students. We read the provider's own published pages, and every price carries an as-of date.

How we scored: every program below was rated 0–10 on five weighted criteria — Outcomes (30%), Cost & Value (25%), Academics (20%), Support Services (15%), and Flexibility (10%). Firsthand does not audit schools or survey students: ratings analyze officially published data and each provider's own documentation, and each figure is cited to a primary source with an as-of date; self-reported outcomes are labeled as such. Affiliate commissions never affect scores or rank order. Read our full methodology.

Frequently asked questions

Which IT certification is best value in 2026?

On price alone, Google's Associate Cloud Engineer ($125) and AWS Solutions Architect Associate ($150) are the cheapest exams here (as of 2026-10-02). We rank AWS first because it pairs the low fee with a 50% renewal discount and online delivery in 10 languages.

All four. AWS and Google associate exams last 3 years. Security+ renews through CompTIA's continuing education program for $150 per three years. CISSP needs 120 CPE credits per three-year cycle and a $135 annual fee.

Why is PMP not included?

PMI's PMP page did not show the exam fee when we checked on 2026-10-02, and we only publish prices we can read on the official site.

Do you have pass rates or salary data?

No. None of these certifying bodies publishes pass rates on the pages we read, and we do not run our own surveys.
