Our verdict
Free File Fillable Forms is the IRS's no cost option for people who can prepare a return from the forms and instructions. IRS.gov says it is available for any income level, does basic calculations with limited error checking, prepares a current year federal return only, and does not prepare a state return (as of 2026-10-02). Some forms and attachments are not supported, and you need a 10-digit US cell phone number that can receive text messages to create an account. The IRS page, updated 24 September 2026, says the program is open now and will close Oct. 15, 2026. Taxpayers with an adjusted gross income of $89,000 or less can instead use IRS Free File guided software from partner companies, but only by starting at IRS.gov/freefile. Support scores low because the tool expects you to know the forms. This is information, not tax advice.
