Our verdict

Carnival ranks first on published booking terms. Its ticket contract shows that on 6-day and longer cruises (and all Alaska, Europe, Transatlantic and Panama Canal sailings) you pay nothing except non-refundable payments up to 91 days out, then the deposit, then the greater of the deposit or 50% from 55 days, 75% from 29 days, and 100% only at 14 days or less (as of 2026-10-02). That is the latest full-fare cutoff among the four lines. The trade-offs: Early Saver deposits are non-refundable and turn into a credit minus a $50 fee, the schedule applies to the whole cabin, and gratuities of $17.00 to $19.00 per person per day are extra. Terms change, so read Carnival's current ticket contract before booking. We did not sail with Carnival; this reads its published terms.

What the evidence says

Pros & cons

Pros

  • Late cancellation charges step up slowly: on 6-day and longer cruises you lose only the deposit between 90 and 56 days, 50% (or the deposit) from 55 to 30 days, and 75% from 29 to 15 days; the full fare is only lost at 14 days or less
  • Short 2 to 5 day cruises have no cancellation charge up to 76 days out, apart from non-refundable payments
  • Gratuities are published as daily amounts, $17.00 for standard staterooms and $19.00 for suites (as of 2026-10-02), and can be adjusted onboard before you disembark

Cons & red flags

  • Early Saver deposits are non-refundable; cancelling before final payment gives a non-refundable, non-transferable future cruise credit worth the deposit minus a $50 per person service fee
  • In multi-person cabins, the cancellation schedule applies to the whole cabin even if only one guest cancels
  • Gratuities are not part of the fare: the recommended amount posts to your onboard account each day unless you prepay it
