Quick answer

For the SAT, start with College Board's free official practice: scored full-length tests in Bluebook plus Khan Academy's Official SAT Prep (as of 2026-10-02). For the LSAT, LSAC's LawHub Advantage ($124 a year) gives official PrepTests in the real interface. For the GRE, Magoosh Premium ($149 for 1 month, $179 for 6 months) teaches the material, and ETS's POWERPREP tests (two free, then $44.95 each) are the most realistic practice. Firsthand does not run score studies; these ratings analyse published pricing and content.

Test prep ranges from free official materials to full paid courses. This guide covers official or major prep for three named tests: the SAT (College Board's own practice), the LSAT (LSAC's LawHub Advantage) and the GRE (ETS's official POWERPREP tests and Magoosh's GRE Premium course). Prices come from each provider's official page in US dollars as of 2026-10-02. None of these providers publishes audited score-improvement data on the pages we read, so Outcomes reflects how closely the material matches the real test and any stated guarantee, not score gains. We score each one on five weighted criteria: Outcomes (30%), Cost and Value (25%), Academics (20%), Support Services (15%) and Flexibility (10%). Firsthand does not audit programs or survey students. We read the provider's own published pages, and every price carries an as-of date.

How we scored: every program below was rated 0–10 on five weighted criteria — Outcomes (30%), Cost & Value (25%), Academics (20%), Support Services (15%), and Flexibility (10%). Firsthand does not audit schools or survey students: ratings analyze officially published data and each provider's own documentation, and each figure is cited to a primary source with an as-of date; self-reported outcomes are labeled as such. Affiliate commissions never affect scores or rank order. Read our full methodology.

College Board Official SAT Practice (Bluebook and Khan Academy)

7.8/10

College Board's own SAT practice is free and official: scored full-length tests in Bluebook, a large question bank and a Khan Academy course built with College Board. It lacks a teacher, so self-starters do best with it.

  • Free and official: College Board, which makes the SAT, provides the practice tests and question bank at no cost
  • No human instructor or structured course; you build your own plan from the pieces

2.

LSAC LawHub Advantage (LSAT)

7.1/10

LawHub Advantage is LSAC's own $124-a-year subscription for official LSAT PrepTests in the real test interface. It is the source material, not a course.

  • Made by LSAC, the Law School Admission Council, with practice in the authentic LSAT test interface
  • Practice material only: there is no instructor or teaching of LSAT strategy in the plan as described

Magoosh GRE Premium

6.8/10

Magoosh GRE Premium is a self-paced video course with 1,600+ questions, up to 6 practice tests and some official ETS questions, from $149. It teaches, which ETS's own materials do not, but its practice tests are not official.

  • A full course rather than just tests: 290+ video lessons, 1,600+ practice questions and up to 6 practice tests
  • Most practice tests come from Magoosh's own question pool, not ETS

ETS Official GRE Prep (POWERPREP)

6.7/10

ETS's own GRE practice gives two free full-length tests and paid POWERPREP PLUS tests at $44.95 each. It is the most realistic practice available but does not teach.

  • Written by ETS, which makes the GRE, so every question is real
  • No teaching: these are tests and books, not lessons or a study plan

Frequently asked questions

Is official test prep better than a paid course?

Official material is the most realistic practice because it comes from the test maker, and for the SAT it is free. Official tools do little teaching, so a course like Magoosh helps if you need lessons and a plan.

Do any of these guarantee a higher score?

Magoosh advertises a +5 point guarantee on a previous GRE score for its Premium plans. The official providers do not offer score guarantees on the pages we read.

Do you test these products?

No. Firsthand does not run its own score studies. We read each provider's official pricing and product pages and cite them with an as-of date.
