Our verdict

For iPhone owners the Apple Watch Series 12 is the default choice, because the only other watch in this guide that works with iPhone is the Garmin. Apple's store lists it from $399 for the 42mm or 46mm aluminum GPS model (as of 2026-10-02). Apple's spec sheet lists the S11 chip (64-bit dual-core, 4-core Neural Engine), up to 2000 nits peak brightness, water resistance to 50m under ISO 22810:2010, IP6X dust resistance, and health features including ECG, Blood Oxygen, a temperature sensor, Sleep apnea notifications and Hypertension notifications. Apple claims up to 24 hours of normal use and up to 38 hours in Low Power Mode, with up to 80% charge in about 30 minutes; these are Apple's ratings, not our measurements, and they are the shortest in this guide. It requires iPhone 11 or later with iOS 27 or later. Apple does not publish a set number of years of software updates, and its 1-year limited warranty excludes accidental damage. Firsthand did not test this watch; the rating comes from Apple's published specifications, price and warranty terms.
