Our verdict
The Forerunner 970 is a training watch first, and on battery it is in a different class from the other three. Garmin lists it at $749.99 (as of 2026-10-02). Garmin rates it at up to 15 days in smartwatch mode, up to 26 hours in GPS-only mode and up to 21 hours with all-systems multi-band GNSS; these are Garmin's claims, not our measurements. Garmin's spec listing includes a 1.4-inch 454 x 454 AMOLED display, sapphire crystal lens, titanium bezel, 5 ATM water rating, 32 GB of storage, an ECG app, skin temperature, Pulse Ox, an LED flashlight and a built-in speaker and microphone. It is the only watch in this guide that Garmin lists as compatible with both iPhone and Android, though some notification features are Android only. The trade-offs: it costs close to double the others, has no cellular option, carries a one-year warranty, and Garmin does not publish a minimum update period. Firsthand did not test this watch; the rating is based on Garmin's published specifications, manual, price and warranty.
